The Dutch winter is rarely extremely cold, but it is almost always wet and windy. That makes choosing a winter coat different from choosing one in a country where it simply freezes. A thick down jacket that works perfectly at minus fifteen in dry air is often the wrong item here in November: you get wet, the filling clumps and the insulation disappears.

This guide covers what actually matters: what's inside the coat, what happens on the outside and how it should fit. Brands come after that.

TL;DR: For the Dutch winter, a water-repellent outer layer matters more than maximum insulation. Choose down with a fill power of 600 or higher for the most comfort per gram, or synthetic filling if you're often out in the rain. On fit, allow room for one layer underneath: no more.

Down or synthetic?

Down

Down is the soft under-plumage of duck or goose, and it is still the best insulation per gram that exists. A down jacket is lighter and more compressible than any synthetic alternative at the same warmth.

Quality is expressed as fill power: the volume that 28 grams of down occupies. The higher the number, the more air it traps and the better it insulates.

• 550–650: fine for the Dutch winter, and most of the market
• 650–800: noticeably lighter and warmer, the premium segment
• 800+: expedition level, rarely needed in the Netherlands

The drawback of down is water. Wet down clumps and barely insulates. That's why the better brands use a water-repellent coating on the down itself, or a genuinely waterproof outer fabric.

Synthetic

Synthetic filling keeps insulating and stays warm when wet. It is heavier and bulkier than down at the same warmth, but easier to care for and usually cheaper. For anyone cycling through all weathers daily, that's often the smarter choice.

Waterproof, water-repellent or neither?

These three get used interchangeably, and it costs people money.

Water-repellent (DWR) is a coating on the outer fabric that makes water bead off. It works in light rain, wears off over time and needs reapplying. This is what most fashion coats have.

Waterproof means there's a membrane inside and the seams are taped. These coats hold off sustained rain. Recognisable by a stated water column in millimetres: from 10,000 mm upwards you're talking serious protection.

Neither applies to many wool coats and uncoated cotton parkas. Beautiful, but expect to need an umbrella.

For the Netherlands, water-repellent is the minimum, and waterproof is the difference between a coat you wear and a coat that stays on the hook.

Fit: the mistake everyone makes

The most common mistake is buying a size up "for the thick jumper underneath". Insulation works by trapping a layer of still air against your body. Too much room means that air circulates and carries the warmth away.

Check three points:

Shoulders. The seam should sit on your shoulder, not beyond it. This is the one point that can't be corrected.

Room for one layer. You should be able to wear a jumper underneath without it pulling. Two layers is unnecessary.

Length. A hip-length coat moves better and reads sportier. Thigh-length or longer is noticeably warmer, because your upper legs account for a large share of heat loss. For cycling in the Netherlands, hip length is more practical.

The brands

Canada Goose

Built for real cold, and it shows. Heavy build, plenty of fur detailing, a pronounced silhouette. For the Dutch winter often more coat than you need, but it is the reference point for warmth. Browse the Canada Goose coats.

What are people wearing this winter?

The AW26 picture is clear: oversized coats, layered fabrics, padded surfaces and engineered silhouettes. Volume isn't a side note this season, it's the starting point.

On colour, the same as knitwear: brown in every shade dominates, from espresso to cognac. Alongside that there are copper metallic accents and deep jewel tones as a counterweight to the neutrals.

In practice: a roomier coat is no risk this year, and brown is the safest way to look new.

Care

A good winter coat lasts ten years if you do two things.

Wash it once per season, at the end. Dirt and body oils break down both the filling and the coating. Use a detergent made for down or technical clothing: ordinary detergent leaves residues that destroy the water repellency.

Tumble-dry down with dryer balls. That sounds contradictory, but it's the only way to get the filling lofted again. Without it your coat stays clumped and cold.
