"How much does a Hermès bag cost?" is one of the most-asked questions in luxury fashion, and the honest answer is: it depends on more than you'd think. Two bags of the same brand, the same model and the same size can differ by a factor of ten in price, purely on the basis of the leather.

The four factors that set the price

1. The material

By far the biggest factor. At most luxury houses, a bag in exotic leather (crocodile, alligator, lizard, ostrich) costs a multiple of the same bag in calfskin. Not as a markup, but because the skins are rare, tightly regulated and processed with far more waste.

There's a wide spread within ordinary leather too. A grained, textured leather that hides scratches takes more work than a smooth one, and that shows.

2. The size

At virtually every brand the price tracks the size, but not proportionally. Small bags cost more per centimetre because the handwork is in the construction (the closure, the seams, the lining) and that work is largely the same regardless of volume. A mini therefore rarely costs half of a large model.

3. The hardware

Gold-plated brass costs more than palladium-plated or plain chrome. At some brands the hardware is a separate option with its own surcharge. On rare executions (set with diamonds, for instance) you leave the world of bags and enter that of jewellery.

4. Scarcity

This is the factor with nothing to do with production cost. At brands that deliberately restrict supply, the waiting list itself becomes part of the price. On the secondary market you then pay above retail: not because the bag is better, but because you can have it now.

Hermès

The most expensive of the major houses, and the one with the strongest waiting-list dynamic. The Birkin and the Kelly are the best-known models. In standard calfskin these start in the order of ten to fifteen thousand euros; in exotic leather that runs to a multiple of it. Rare combinations of colour, leather and hardware reach auction figures far beyond that.

What makes Hermès exceptional is that the bags trade structurally above their original retail price on the secondary market. That's true of almost no other brand.

Chanel

Which bags hold their value?

Three characteristics predict it best.

A classic model that has been in production for decades. The Birkin, the Kelly, the Classic Flap and the Speedy have been around so long that they're no longer fashion. An it-bag from three seasons ago is.

A neutral colour. Black, brown and tan hold value better than seasonal colours. That's boring advice and it's correct.

Demonstrable condition and provenance. Box, dust bag, receipt and a bag without obvious wear make a considerable difference to what you get back.

New or pre-loved?

For the most expensive segments the secondary market is often the smarter route. At Hermès it's frequently the only realistic route, because the boutique route requires a waiting list and a purchase history.

Buying pre-loved also means you don't absorb the steepest depreciation: that happens in the first year. At brands whose bags trade above retail that argument doesn't hold, but at most others it does.
